Natural Danisco antimicrobials turn down growth hormone Leading supplier of natural food protection solutions responds to growing consumer trend

Danisco is now offering dairy manufacturers the opportunity to optimise the shelf life of their products using natural milk-based fermentates free of artificial growth hormones.
From 1 February 2010, the company has pledged that all MicroGARD® fermentates made from cultured skim milk are derived from cows that have not received the growth hormone recombinant bovine somatotropin (rBST).

Meeting consumer demands
The move is a direct response to growing consumer demand for milk-based products that do not contain milk from rBST-treated cows.
“The US Food and Drug Administration has determined that there is no significant difference in the milk from cows treated with rBST and cows that are not. Our reason for switching to rBST-free milk is purely a proactive response to consumer demand,” says Matthew Hundt, global product manager at Danisco.
“The change has no impact on product performance, allergen status or nutritional labelling. We are also pleased to provide these products at no additional cost to our customers.”

Up to 50% longer shelf life
MicroGARD® is a key range within the Danisco natural food protection portfolio, which is the most comprehensive on the market. Used in cottage cheese, sour cream, yogurt, dairy beverages and other fresh dairy applications, the milk fermentates are an effective tool for keeping spoilage organisms at bay. Shelf life is up to 50% longer as a result.
“MicroGARD® is effective throughout the shelf life of a product, even after the container is opened,” Hundt adds.
Danisco also produces MicroGARD® fermentates derived from certified GMO-free dextrose for meat and bakery products, soups, sauces and dressings. Both milk and dextrose fermentates are available in organic versions.
Altogether, the easy-to-use range can be customised to control specific classes of spoilage organisms, enabling wider product distribution and reducing product returns.
