Dry pet food, the most common form used, is typically vulnerable to mould growth. Bacterial growth may also occur if the product has been improperly stored or becomes cross-contaminated.
Canned pet foods that are subjected to high heat during the pressure-cooking process, may be prone to oxidation, even while bacteria, yeast, and mould are destroyed. In pouched products and semi-moist pet treats, the content of meat, grain and added fat may become oxidised and produce off flavours and aromas during mixing and heating. Treats produced at lower temperatures and pressure are more susceptible to mould contamination and become mouldy during storage.
